Our theme today is “Thirsting for God (Desire for His Presence).” Psalm 63 is a song of David when he was in the Desert of Judah, cut off from the sanctuary and from the normal supports of life.
In that dry and parched place, he discovers that what he longs for most is not comfort or safety, but the Lord Himself.
This matters for us because we also walk through seasons of dryness, and this psalm teaches us what it looks like to desire God more than His gifts.
Psalm 63:1-8
A psalm of David. When he was in the Desert of Judah.
1 You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.
2 I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory.
3 Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.
4 I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands.
5 I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you.
6 On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night.
7 Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings.
8 I cling to you; your right hand upholds me.
Devotional
"David begins by saying, “You, God, are my God,” and describes himself as earnestly seeking and thirsting for the Lord in a land where there is no water. His body is in a physical wilderness, but his deepest desire is spiritual, shaped by past encounters where he has seen God’s power and glory in the sanctuary.
Because he knows the Lord’s steadfast love is better than life, he commits to glorify God with his lips and to lift up his hands in praise as long as he lives. This is a picture of genuine faith that finds satisfaction in God Himself, like a hungry person tasting the richest food, and it points us to the fullness we have in Christ, who gives living water to those who come to Him in faith.
The psalm then shows what desire for God looks like in the quiet moments. On his bed and through the night watches, David remembers and meditates on the Lord, instead of letting fear or bitterness rule his thoughts. He knows that God is his help, so he sings in the shadow of the Lord’s wings, an image of close protection and tender care.
Finally, David says he clings to God while God’s right hand upholds him, reminding us that our pursuit of God rests on His strong grip on us. For believers today, this draws us toward a life where we regularly turn our thoughts to the Lord, repent of coldness or distraction, and lean on His grace in the church, in our relationships, and in our private moments, trusting that He will hold us fast."
Prayer
Lord, You are my God, and I praise You that Your love is better than life.
Thank You that in Jesus Christ You have drawn near to me so that my thirsty soul can find living water in Him.
I confess that many times my heart runs after comfort, success, or distraction instead of truly longing for Your presence.
Please forgive my spiritual dryness and my tendency to seek satisfaction in lesser things.
Teach me to remember You on my bed, to think of You in the quiet hours, and to find joy in the shadow of Your wings.
Help me cling to You today with faith, even as Your strong right hand upholds me.
Stir my heart to desire You more than Your gifts and to praise You with my lips in every season. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
