In Romans 5, Paul turns from explaining how we are justified by faith to describing the rich blessings that flow from being right with God through the Lord Jesus.

In verses 1–5, he shows that peace with God and hope of glory shape how we view present sufferings. This matters because trials can easily make us doubt God’s goodness or our standing with Him.

Here we learn that even our hardships are held within the steady love of God and used for our eternal good.

Romans 5:1-5

Peace and Hope

1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.

3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;

4 perseverance, character; and character, hope.

5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

Devotional

Paul begins by declaring that since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. This peace is not just a feeling but a settled relationship: the war between us and the Holy God is over because of Christ’s finished work.

We stand in grace, having gained access into a new position where God’s favor rests on us. From this place of security, we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God, knowing our future with Him is sure.

Surprisingly, Paul says we also rejoice in our sufferings. He is not calling us to enjoy pain, but to see what God is producing through it. Suffering, held in God’s hands, produces perseverance—a steady, enduring faith that does not run away.

Perseverance shapes proven character, and that tested character deepens our hope. Like metal refined in the fire, faith that has walked through hardship becomes more genuine and more anchored in God’s promises.

This hope does not put us to shame because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. The Spirit’s inner witness reminds us, even in tears, that we are dearly loved children. Our circumstances may shake, but God’s love is not on trial; Christ’s cross has already settled that.

As we walk through suffering with our eyes on Jesus, we learn to cling to Him more tightly, to trust His purposes more deeply, and to reflect His character more clearly in a watching world.

Prayer

Father, thank You that through Jesus I have peace with You and stand in Your grace.

Thank You that my sufferings are not signs of Your rejection but places where You are at work to grow perseverance, character, and hope.

Forgive me for the times I complain, doubt Your goodness, or see my trials only as obstacles.

Help me to trust that You are using every hardship to draw me closer to Yourself and to make me more like Christ.

Holy Spirit, pour the love of God fresh into my heart today, especially in the places that hurt.

Teach me to rejoice not in the pain itself, but in the hope that will never disappoint.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
