Our theme today is “The Lord Is My Shepherd.” Psalm 23 is a song of David, who knew both the dangers of life and the care of God as his shepherd.

Here he speaks very personally about the Lord’s guidance, provision, and protection in every season.

This matters for us because we also walk through green pastures and dark valleys, and we need to know who is truly leading us.

Psalm 23:1-6

A psalm of David.

1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.

2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters,

3 He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.

4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Devotional

David begins with confidence that the Lord is his shepherd, so he lacks nothing. The images of green pastures, quiet waters, and a refreshed soul show the Lord as the One who knows what His people need and leads them into true rest.

He guides along the right paths for His name’s sake, which means His care for us is rooted in His own faithful character, not in our performance. In Christ, the Good Shepherd who laid down His life for the sheep, we see this love most clearly, and by faith in Him we can say with David that our deepest needs are met in the Lord.

The psalm then moves into the darker places of life, speaking of the darkest valley where evil and danger seem close. Yet David says he will not fear, because the Lord is with him, and the rod and staff of the shepherd bring comfort, not harm.

This is like a child who can sleep in a storm because a trusted parent is in the room; the circumstances may not change, but the presence of the one who loves them makes all the difference. For believers, the risen Lord Jesus is with us by His Spirit in every valley, and His Word and discipline, like the rod and staff, keep us close and safe as we follow Him.

Finally, the picture shifts from pasture to a table prepared in the presence of enemies, with oil poured on the head and a cup that overflows. The Lord not only protects but also honors and satisfies His people, even when opposition remains around them.

David rests in the promise that goodness and faithful love will follow him all his days, leading to a future of dwelling in the house of the Lord forever. In Christ, we share this hope of unbroken fellowship with God, and this gives us courage to obey, serve in our local churches, and love others today, knowing that our Shepherd will never abandon us.

Prayer

Lord, I praise You as my Shepherd who provides, guides, and protects me.

I thank You that in Christ I lack nothing I truly need, even when I feel weak or unsure.

I confess that I often focus more on my fears, my enemies, and my worries than on Your presence with me.

Please teach my heart to trust that You are with me in both green pastures and the darkest valleys.

Use Your Word and Your Spirit to keep me on the right paths for Your name’s sake.

Help me to rest in Your goodness and faithful love today and to serve others out of the overflow of the grace You have given me.

Keep my eyes fixed on the day when I will dwell in Your house forever.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
