The book of Proverbs, written primarily by King Solomon, offers timeless wisdom for living rightly before the Lord. In Proverbs 9:10–12, Solomon reminds us that true wisdom begins not with human understanding but with reverence for the Holy God.

This theme—“the fear of the Lord”—is not about terror but about humble awe and trust in His holiness and authority. It shapes how believers think, choose, and live every day, anchoring our hearts in God’s truth when the world’s wisdom pulls us away.

Proverbs 9:10–12

10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

11 For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life.

12 If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you; if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer.

Devotional

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” These words capture the foundation of all true understanding. Solomon teaches that wisdom is not found in human cleverness or experience but in rightly recognizing who God is—holy, all-knowing, and sovereign. Those who honor Him learn how to live well because they first bow before His authority.

This fear is not cowering fear but reverent humility. It leads to repentance, dependence, and obedience—the life of someone who knows that God alone defines what is good. In Christ, this wisdom is made complete, for He is the very wisdom of God revealed to us (1 Corinthians 1:30). As we follow Jesus, our reverence for Him deepens, and our choices reflect His truth.

Solomon ends by reminding us that wisdom brings life, but rejecting the Lord brings harm to our own soul. The wise person trusts God’s ways even when they seem costly, knowing that in fearing the Lord we find both joy and security. Like a tree rooted by quiet waters, the one who fears the Lord stands firm through every storm because their heart rests in Him.

Thank You that true wisdom begins with knowing and honoring You.

Forgive me for the times I have relied on my own understanding instead of seeking Your Word.

Teach me to fear You rightly—not in dread, but in awe and trust.

Help me to walk in Your wisdom today, turning from pride and sin that lead to destruction.

Fill me with the Holy Spirit so that my life reflects Your truth and grace.

Keep me rooted in Christ, who is my wisdom and righteousness.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
