Daniel, a faithful servant of God living in Babylon, records in chapter 4 the humbling of King Nebuchadnezzar and his confession that the Most High rules over all kingdoms.
This passage matters because we often forget that control belongs to the Lord, not to us or any earthly power.
In a world that prizes achievement and self-determination, remembering God’s absolute sovereignty leads us to trust Him with humility and peace.
Daniel 4:34–37
34 At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honored and glorified him who lives forever. His dominion is an eternal dominion; his kingdom endures from generation to generation.
35 All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him: “What have you done?”
36 At the same time that my sanity was restored, my honor and splendor were returned to me for the glory of my kingdom. My advisers and nobles sought me out, and I was restored to my throne and became even greater than before.
37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt and glorify the King of heaven, because everything he does is right and all his ways are just. And those who walk in pride he is able to humble.
Devotional
Nebuchadnezzar learned firsthand that the Lord alone reigns over all creation. After boasting in his might and success, the king was struck down in judgment until he recognized God’s supreme authority. When his reason returned, his first response was worship. He declared that all God’s works are right and His ways just.
This story shows that human pride always ends in humiliation, but repentance opens the way to restoration. The Lord does not crush the humble; He lifts them up to see His glory and grace. We too must remember that power, wisdom, and even breath itself are gifts from His hand. Trusting His rule frees us from the anxious need to control outcomes.
For believers today, this truth calls for quiet confidence and daily surrender. In our work, our relationships, and our challenges, God’s sovereign rule is not a threat—it is our security. Like Nebuchadnezzar, we find peace only when we bow our hearts before the King of heaven and let His will be done.
Prayer
Father, You are the Most High who rules over every nation, heart, and moment.
Thank You for showing mercy to those who humble themselves before You.
Forgive me for the pride that makes me trust in my plans instead of Your purposes.
Remind me that You alone have the power to exalt or bring low.
Help me today to rest in Your sovereign care and give thanks in every circumstance.
Make my life a witness to Your wisdom and authority.
I surrender my plans again to You, Lord.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
