Paul wrote to the believers in Ephesus to strengthen their faith and help them live out their new identity in Christ.
Near the end of his letter, he reminds them that the Christian life is a battle, not against people, but against spiritual forces of evil. This passage urges us to stand firm in God’s strength, fully equipped with His armor.
It matters today because every believer faces daily spiritual resistance and needs the Lord’s power to remain faithful.
Ephesians 6:10-17
The Armor of God
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.
11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.
12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,
15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Devotional
Paul calls believers to “be strong in the Lord,” recognizing that victory does not come from our own willpower but from His might. The armor of God is not symbolic self-help; it is God’s provision for real spiritual warfare.
Each piece—the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, and sword of the Spirit—points us back to Christ Himself and what He has already secured for us. To put on this armor is to live daily in the truth of the gospel.
The strength of this armor lies in dependence, not self-confidence. We stand firm not by avoiding conflict but by trusting the Lord’s Word and enduring in prayer. The shield of faith extinguishes fiery doubts, and the sword of the Spirit, God’s Word, defends and advances truth in a world that resists it.
Like a soldier who trains daily, we must remain alert and ready, not through fear but through steadfast confidence in Christ.
The call to “stand” is repeated because Paul wants believers to remember that victory is already won in Christ. The enemy’s schemes are real, but his defeat is certain. Our task is to hold our ground in faith, clothed in God’s armor, strengthened by His Spirit, and anchored in His promises.
When we stand firm together as the Church, the light of Christ shines even brighter in a dark world.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for being my strength and defender.
You have given me everything I need to stand firm in Your truth.
Forgive me for the times I lower my guard and rely on my own strength.
Teach me to put on Your full armor each day and to trust in Christ’s finished work for victory.
Guard my heart with Your righteousness and steady my mind with Your Word.
Help me walk in faith, courage, and love as Your soldier in this world.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
