The Gospel of Mark tells of a night when the Lord Jesus and His disciples crossed the Sea of Galilee and were suddenly caught in a violent storm.

These men, many of them seasoned fishermen, were terrified as waves filled their boat. This story shows not only the Lord’s power over nature but also His tender care for fearful hearts.

It reminds us that when life feels overwhelming, Jesus is still present and able to calm both the storm and our fears.

Mark 4:35-41

Jesus Calms the Storm

35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.”

36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him.

37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.

38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Devotional

In this passage, the disciples’ fear revealed how little they understood about who was in the boat with them. While they panicked at the storm’s strength, Jesus was asleep, fully at peace in the Father’s care.

When He rebuked the wind and waves, everything fell silent in an instant, showing that even creation obeys its Maker. The Lord used this moment to teach His followers that faith means trusting His presence more than we fear our circumstances.

Every believer faces storms—times when control slips from our hands, and fear rises. The Lord Jesus never promised a life free from trouble, but He promised to be near to His own.

When we cry out to Him in weakness, He hears and answers, sometimes by changing our surroundings, but always by strengthening our hearts. Like the disciples, we learn that our peace does not depend on the size of the storm but on the greatness of the Savior who is with us.

This scene calls us to a deeper faith. When Jesus asked, “Why are you afraid?” He was not shaming His disciples but inviting them to trust Him more fully.

The same Lord who calmed the sea has conquered sin and death by His cross. If He rules over the wind and waves, we can rest in His care no matter what comes.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You are the Master of wind and sea, and nothing is beyond Your power. Thank You that even when I am afraid, You are never distant or unsure.

Forgive me for the times I doubt Your goodness or let fear rule my thoughts. Teach me to rest in Your presence and remember that You are greater than every storm around me.

Strengthen my faith to call on You first instead of giving in to worry. Fill me with the peace that only You can give, even in the midst of trouble. Let my calm trust in You point others to Your saving power. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
