The book of Lamentations was written after Jerusalem’s destruction, capturing the grief of God’s people over their sin and loss.

Yet in the middle of deep sorrow, the writer pauses to remember the Lord’s steadfast love and mercy. These verses remind us that God’s faithfulness never fades, even when life feels dark and uncertain.

His compassion renews each morning and gives every generation reason to hope again.

Lamentations 3:22-26

22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.

23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

24. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.”

25 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him;

26 it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.

Devotional

The prophet’s world had collapsed, yet he found strength by turning his mind toward God’s character. He declared that the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases and His mercies are new every morning.

This choice to remember God’s faithfulness was not denial of pain but an act of trust in the unchanging goodness of the Lord. When we face disappointment or loss, we too can rest in the truth that His mercy does not run out with our circumstances.

The writer calls the Lord his portion, meaning that having God Himself is better than any earthly security. Everything around him had been taken away, but the Lord’s presence was still his inheritance.

Waiting quietly for the Lord becomes an act of faith, trusting His timing and goodness. In a world that prizes quick relief, God’s Word teaches us that patient hope in Him is never wasted.

Every generation of believers proves the same truth: the Lord’s faithfulness holds steady through every storm. His mercy met our deepest need at the cross, where Jesus bore our sin so we could be restored.

That same steadfast love will carry us through today’s trials and into eternity. To remember His faithfulness is to find strength for today and confidence for tomorrow.

Prayer

Father, thank You for Your steadfast love that never ends and Your mercies that are new each morning.

When I grow weary or fearful, remind me that You do not change.

Forgive me for the times I doubt Your goodness or rush ahead instead of waiting on You.

Teach me to rest quietly in Your faithfulness and to trust that Your plans are always good.

Help me to remember that You are my portion and my hope.

Let my heart cling to Your promises today.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
