Peter wrote to Christians who were suffering rejection and hardship for their faith, reminding them that their true citizenship was in heaven.
In this passage, he celebrates the living hope believers have because of Christ’s resurrection. This hope is not wishful thinking but a secure promise of eternal life and glory with the Lord.
It matters for daily living because it gives us strength to endure trials and courage to live differently as strangers in this world.
1 Peter 1:3–9
Praise to God for a Living Hope
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you,
5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
6 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.
7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy,
9 for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
Devotional
Peter begins with praise to God, who in His mercy has caused us to be born again into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Our hope is alive because our Savior lives.
The inheritance kept in heaven for us cannot spoil or fade, and we are guarded by God’s power until the day of salvation is fully revealed. This truth anchors us when everything earthly feels unstable or temporary.
Peter acknowledges that these believers suffer grief in various trials, yet he says such testing proves the genuineness of faith. Just as gold is refined by fire, faith matures in hardship and shines more brightly through it.
Trials are not signs of God’s absence but evidence of His refining presence. Every hardship can draw us nearer to the One we have not seen, yet love and trust.
Finally, Peter lifts our eyes beyond the present. Even now, though we do not see Christ, we rejoice with a joy inexpressible, for our salvation is certain.
The Holy God has made His people pilgrims—citizens of another kingdom, kept safe by grace. Living with this hope frees us from fear and makes our faith a witness to a hopeless world.
Prayer
Father, thank You for giving me a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
You have promised an inheritance that will never perish, and You keep me by Your power.
Forgive me for when I lose sight of heaven and grow discouraged by temporary troubles.
Help me to stand firm in faith when life feels uncertain or heavy.
Teach me to rejoice even in trials, knowing You are purifying my heart.
Strengthen my trust in the Lord Jesus, whom I love yet have not seen.
Let Your living hope shine through my life today.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
