Psalm 136 is a worship song of Israel, calling God’s people to give thanks as they remember who the Lord is and what He has done.
In these opening verses, the psalmist praises the Lord as the God of gods and the Creator of heaven and earth, repeating that His steadfast love endures forever.
This matters for us because our hearts are easily shaken by changing circumstances and shifting emotions. We need to be reminded that the Lord’s covenant love does not change from generation to generation.
Psalm 136:1-9
1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever.
2 Give thanks to the God of gods. His love endures forever.
3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords: His love endures forever.
4 to him who alone does great wonders, His love endures forever.
5 who by his understanding made the heavens, His love endures forever.
6 who spread out the earth upon the waters, His love endures forever.
7 who made the great lights—His love endures forever.
8 the sun to govern the day, His love endures forever.
9 the moon and stars to govern the night; His love endures forever.
Devotional
The psalm begins with a simple command: “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good.” It then repeats the refrain that His steadfast love endures forever, almost like a drumbeat for the soul.
By naming the Lord as the God of gods and Lord of lords, the psalmist lifts our eyes above every earthly power and rival. When we remember that the One who loves us rules over all, gratitude becomes more than a feeling; it becomes an act of faith.
The psalmist then points to creation as a witness of God’s faithful love. The Lord alone does “great wonders,” making the heavens with understanding and spreading out the earth over the waters.
The sun to rule the day and the moon and stars for the night are not just beautiful; they are daily reminders of God’s steady care. Just as the sun rises each morning, His mercies meet us again; just as the stars remain in their courses, His promises hold firm.
For believers today, this psalm invites us to read our own lives in light of God’s unchanging love. The same Lord who hung the stars has kept His people through centuries and has shown His steadfast love most clearly in Christ’s cross and resurrection.
When we face uncertainty, we can join this ancient chorus and say, “His love endures forever” over our fears, our families, and our future. Remembering His works in creation and redemption strengthens trust and fuels worship in every season.
Prayer
Father, I thank You that You are good and that Your steadfast love truly endures forever.
You are the Maker of heaven and earth, and yet You care for me with personal, covenant love.
Forgive me for the times I forget Your faithfulness and let my worries speak louder than Your promises.
Help me to see the sun, moon, and stars as reminders that Your mercy and power never fade.
Teach me to give thanks in all circumstances, knowing that Your love in Christ will not fail through any generation.
Let my heart rest today in who You are and what You have done.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
