Paul wrote 2 Corinthians to a struggling church that often questioned his weaknesses and hardships. In this passage, he describes a “thorn in the flesh” that kept him humble and dependent on the Lord’s grace.

This theme matters because every believer faces pain or limitation that reminds us we cannot live by our own strength. God’s grace is not just a concept—it is His active power to sustain us when we feel weak.

2 Corinthians 12:7–10

7 or because of these surpassingly great revelations. Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me.

8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.

9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Devotional

When Paul pleaded for God to remove his “thorn,” the Lord answered, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Rather than healing Paul’s pain, God gave him something greater—ongoing grace. The lesson is that the Lord often leaves our weaknesses in place so His power can shine through dependent hearts.

Paul’s response shows true faith. He chose to “boast in weaknesses,” not out of self-pity but to highlight Christ’s strength in him. The same grace that saved him also enabled him to endure suffering with confidence. For believers, grace is not a one-time gift but a steady stream of divine help that meets us right where we lack.

When Christians rely on God’s grace instead of personal ability, the world sees the beauty of Christ’s power. Like fragile jars that hold priceless treasure, our weakness becomes the frame that displays His strength. The Holy Spirit uses trials to humble us, refine our trust, and draw us closer to the Savior who said, “My grace is sufficient.”

Prayer

Father, thank You that Your grace truly is enough for every weakness and struggle.

Forgive me for the times I rely on my own strength instead of resting in Yours.

Teach me to see Your hand even in the thorns that humble me.

Help me trust that You know what is best and that Your power is at work within me.

Fill my heart with the joy of knowing that weakness is the doorway to Your strength.

Let Your grace flow through me today in every word and action.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
